Workshop Description:
Location People is now 6 days! By popular demand, we added a full day to the agenda to allow more time for field exercises and more time to cover workflow, post processing, and retouching images after capture.
As requested by many of my past Location People Workshop participants, we are happy to announce the first annual “Summer School” Workshop! This workshop will build on the skills and experiences gained in Location People and will be similar in format and approach but the subjects, locations, and assignments will be entirely new and exciting. The overall mix of activities will include slightly less classroom time but more hands-on assignment and critique.
This workshop is designed to dramatically improve the skill sets required to effectively photograph people in natural settings. As with all of our workshop, we will explore lighting in a detailed but down-to-earth manner. Practical techniques will be demonstrated and then practiced during hands-on exercises. We will cover how to achieve desired lighting effects by using natural/ambient light, on and off camera flash systems, studio strobes, and mixed-source lighting. Participants will work with both models and everyday people to improve their technical abilities and explore techniques to increase their overall comfort level and ability to better connect with human subjects. We will provide both individual and group exercises designed for all skill and experience levels and the individual goals of the participants. Whether you want to simply improve your images of friends and family, overcome photographic fears of working with people, or seriously explore commercial portraiture and advanced lighting techniques, this workshop is for you.
The primary setting for this workshop will be beautiful Norris Lake just north of Knoxville, TN. We will explore shooting our subjects in and around water, in harsh daylight, at night, in wooded settings with mottled light, and on moving boats and jet skis! Assignments will include water sports, lifestyle, fashion, and editorial. You will also have the opportunity to have your work published in Knoxville’s CityView Magazine. Where else can you learn new skills, put them into practice, get immediate feedback, have an amazingly good time, and GET PUBLISHED in the process!
We will take advantage of beautiful Norris Lake for our downtime and social activities as well. Come ready to get wet, swim, wakeboard, water ski, surf behind a boat, jump off of cliffs, and hike mountain trails! My wife and I will host either an elegant dinner or a big cookout (attendees will decide) at our home on the lake one evening.
By popular demand, I will also personally shoot a real session while you actively observe and ask questions. Then, I will reveal the finished images later during the workshop.
While we will build upon the Location People experience, if you have attended that workshop, having done so is not necessarily and pre-requisite. We will tailor the workshop to the attendees’ specific skill levels and goals. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding the suitability of the workshop to meet your needs.
Testimonials from some of my other workshops:
. . . and Bryan, what can I say. You made it all happen. Dude . . . you are so sincere in your desire to give us your all. It comes through and through. It gives me goose bumps to think of you and what you put into your workshops. You are the real deal. I am so grateful to know you . . . you will never quite know what you have meant to me. – Usha
The entire workshop was way beyond what I had expected–total immersion in a subject; taught by an extremely talented and knowledgeable guy; hands-on experience with top-notch gear . . . it was a great and inspiring workshop. – Steve M.
Bryan’s enthusiasm kept everyone keyed up. His teaching style is great, very informative and relaxed, and he obviously enjoys teaching, too. I liked that he started with the basics and built upon that each day and for each assignment. – Flo
I was hoping that attending the Location People workshop would provide me with a solid understanding of basic lighting. I did not expect that I would learn that and much more. Bryan brings an enthusiasm and creativity that are contagious. He teaches you the technical aspects of lighting but also puts it into the context of developing a creative process for yourself that pushes your photography to another level. He gives you the confidence to make the lighting work for you to support your ideas. If you want to really understand lighting and what it can do for your photography then this is the exact workshop for you. – Kate L.
I wanted to drop a note to tell you what an extraordinary workshop experience Location People was — Bryan put together a program that far exceeded everyone’s expectations . . . and, that’s coming from some core TME folks who have come to expect the best. – Steve
Overall I thought LP2 was great. I liked that it pushed me into new areas such as a full-on studio shoot on a restricted time line and with specific objectives. The idea of shooting with an agency was great and really helped tie everything together. I would suggest that anyone who wants to get into shooting people in a controlled lighting environment take the workshop. – Mike
Additional Information:
Getting There:
The closest airport to Knoxville is the Knoxville McGee Tyson Airport (TYS). The airport is approximately 15 minutes from downtown Knoxville. There is taxi service and there are rental cars available at this airport. Taxi fare to downtown Knoxville where our hotel is located is approximately $30.00.
We will release workshop participant contact information to the members of this particular workshop, with each participant’s approval, as the workshop dates approach so that you may arrange car sharing, etc. with each other.
We will only need enough cars to transport participants away from the city to shoot at two or three locations outside of the city, weather permitting. For the rest of the time, all of our shooting locations are within walking distance of the hotel and studio. We do encourage the participants to share cars.
